A spinster of fifty takes a country house for the summer, brings her niece and nephew, and by the second night there is a body at the foot of the stairs and somebody still in the building. Rinehart outsold Christie on both sides of the Atlantic and is the reason the phrase had-I-but-known exists: her narrator is the template for every amateur sleuth who investigates because the police plainly are not going to.
