A Princess of Mars
Barsoom, book one
A Confederate cavalry officer hides from Apache raiders in an Arizona cave, falls asleep, and wakes up on Mars — where the gravity makes him the strongest man on the planet, the green Tharks take him prisoner, and the princess of Helium is the next captive through the door. Burroughs serialised it in 1912 and invented the planetary romance in the process: swords, airships, a dying world, and a love story carrying all of it.
The first book of the Barsoom series. The complete text with a working contents page, one chapter per section, and nothing from the scanner left in the middle of a sentence.
“I am a very old man; how old I do not know. Possibly I am a hundred, possibly more; but I cannot tell because I have never aged as other men, nor do I remember any childhood. So far as I can recollect I have always been a man, a man of about thirty. I appear today as I did forty years and more ago, and yet I feel that I cannot go on living forever; that some day I shall die the real death from which there is no resurrection.”
